Welcome back to Season Four of Through the Glass Recovery!
We’re kicking off this season with a conversation that gets to the heart of what so many of us wrestle with: how do you actually create a life so full there’s no space left for alcohol?
You’ve probably seen the quotes and memes: “Create a life you don’t want to escape from.” It sounds amazing, but what does that really look like in day-to-day life? How do you start to enjoy life after quitting drinking? In this episode, Julie, Steve, Amber, Matt, and Robbie share the real and practical ways they’ve discovered joy, connection, and meaning in sobriety – along with the things they’ve had to let go of.
This isn’t just about staying sober.
It’s about learning to live fully awake, present, and grateful for the moments – big and small – that make life worth showing up for.
In this episode, we talk about:
- Why connection is the foundation of a meaningful sober life
- How concerts, adventures, and family experiences feel richer without alcohol
- The surprising truth about activities that aren’t as fun when you’re sober – and why that’s okay
- The power of small joys, like a cup of tea, nature, or laughter with friends
- How sobriety changes the way we feel emotions – making both the hard and beautiful moments deeper
- Why removing clutter, noise, or old habits can be just as important as adding new experiences
- Stories of rediscovering hobbies and passions with fresh meaning in sobriety
Whether you’re early in recovery or years into your journey, this conversation is filled with encouragement, laughter, and real talk about building a life that feels vibrant, fulfilling, and most importantly – like your own.
Meet our guests:

Matt Shambo, is a 40 year old father of two from Burnt Hills, New York. He celebrated two and a half years sober in August. Matt always believed he would get sober but at the same time feared it may never come. He spent five and half years stuck in the up and down battle with alcoholism before finding a better way. He wants to thank you everyone for sticking with him through all this.
Matt was first introduced to Julie and Steve through Instagram when he was about three months sober. He first joined Through the Glass as a guest on the season 2 premiere, since then he has been on nine times over the last two seasons. Over those two years he’s been able to share his experiences in recovery about topics including: alcohol cravings, vulnerability, sobriety being worth it, spirituality and more. Each episode has been challenging and rewarding in its own way.
Matthew would like to personally thank Julie and Steve for allowing him to share with them and the Through The Glass Recovery Podcast family his recovery journey. They have played a major role in his recovery and many others. They’ve provided the recovery world a unique look every week into guest’s personal experience with getting sober.

Robbie started his sobriety journey due to being sick of the same old story he would put himself though, time and again. He found his cannabis and alcohol use getting worse as the years went on, using them to cope with everything and anything. Robbie is now almost three years sober, and couldn’t be happier with his decision to take on this new journey
Robbie is passionate about sharing his story and providing space for others to share theirs. He is the co-host of the Golden Hour Adventures podcast, sharing extraordinary stories from every day people. In addition, he’s started a men’s mental health podcast alongside Steve called Forged in Silence where they discuss issues that men face but rarely talk about.

I’m Amber and I will be celebrating 4 yrs sober at the end of 2025. I now call Western CO my home after packing up my life on the East Coast and driving 2,000 miles to relocate last September. I currently work in retail but will be leaving retail to train to be a Universal Banker at a credit union here in my community.
Growing up as an only child in a toxic family dynamic with alcoholism and undiagnosed mental health disorders running the show, I developed complex trauma that I wouldn’t be aware of until the day I took my last drink and began to uncover the lies that alcohol had me believing for so long. I lacked self love and self worth and believed I was just not built for the kind of life that I desired.
Sobriety has allowed me to see an alternative path in life and recovery has provided the tools that enable me to walk that path. Today I can say that I truly love the girl who looks back at me in the mirror, and I see evidence with every hard step I take forward, that not only am I built for the life I desire, I’m worthy of it. I openly share my story and my sobriety in the hopes that someone like me sees that thriving IS possible and living a life free from alcohol is fun, beautiful and so full.
